Has anyone ever used hickory for their cabins? I have about 40 acres of large, straight, minimal taper hickory. My concern is checking ,and issues with rot and insects.

Just curious, how big does it get? height? Diameter?

You can build with anything you have. Rot is directly tied to how dry you keep your logs. Insects are kept at bay with non harsh chemical treating. I will probably use SYP, don't think hickory checks more than SYP. Of course checking is more a challenge depending on construction method used. We use full round logs. Checking is not a concern.

Do you have bionic arms and shoulders?

I just went down to the woods to test debarking that hickory, of which is all shagbark, and found it to be almost and impossible job. I think I will have to look at other alternatives.

If cut in the winter it's all but impossible without drawkniving it. Though if cut at the right time in winterhickory ddoesn't have to be debarked before using

Is there a trick to driving rebar into it?

Is there a trick to driving rebar into it?Yea. Ya just load a piece into a 20 gauge shotgun and put the muzzle against the log.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Send a truckload or two out here and I'll let the Oregon bark beetles get a head start on them. I've been looking for a new project to give me a valid excuse for not finishing the last project. This hickory hideaway oughta keep me on the Boss's good side for a year or two.

One of the few problems we have on the west coast is a lack of shagbark hickory for our ax handles.

Judging from prices I've paid for hickory for woodworking projects, couldn't you sell those trees you were going to cut down anyway and come out way ahead after buying some logs?

Still curious about how big hickory gets?

AMEN To that

or get the Cement nailers and pad the ground with trampolines so you can just jump back up when the rebar hits the second log...

i have 35 acre filled with hick, maple, iron wood and oak, i tried to peel a hick once, and found it works great in about 2 years after the bugs get it.

Are you saying that if you cut hickory at the right time of year that the bark falls off, or that it stays on for good? If the latter, what do you put on a hickory log to keep the bark from chipping off and looking like crap over time?
