The Boss and I are taking the dogs up into the high country to fetch a Christmas Tree for the log home. Now that I am actively working on the place we thought it'd be nice to have Christmas down there. Don't worry Bro Bo... Nowhere near moving in... just pretending. Photos to follow.

No photos yet but the tree is standing nearly upright and almost touching the ridgepole. I wanna know how all you folks who don't have a telehandler do this.

If I remember correctly, you have a roof on your cabin!! ha! ha! So how do you do this with a tele. Almost touch the ridgepole, are you jerking our chain? That would have to be nearly 30 feet tall

You know those little green trees you hang in your car to freshen the air? He has one hanging from the ridgepole, hence it is "standing nearly upright and almost touching the ridgepole".

Now that I am actively working on the place .....
Which translates into going down and looking at the place, starting up the tele handler and driving around the house a couple times. :)

Loghousenut,
I hope you enjoy your Christmas! I called the movers to see about their schedule, have the BI coming Friday. Left temp stairs out of spec so he has something to write me up about. I hope to get my CofO soon...maybe I'll have X-mas in my house this year!! Fletcher is coming by Friday so I'm sure I can talk him into posting some photos for me.

I didn't say Holiday tree and my hope is not to offend anyone. I'm going to try to steal cousin Ron's thread and suggest that to All that reads this thread. Would you please put your Christmas tree 2012 photo here in LHN's thread. What a wonderful thing it would be to see all the beautiful trees from our many fine members. I know I would enjoy it. Since our move, we've had a "Charlie Brown" literal, Christmas Tree. The kids gave it to us our first winter here. It came in a triangle box about 2' tall, 1 limb and a bulb. Last year we aded a few more ornaments.
Thanks Ronnie for inspiring me to go out and bring a tree into my home. A few dollars in the generator to run a few lights will be priceless, I don't think there could be a better gift for Linda this year....... well?? being in a cozy log home....
Santa can you hear me?

Winter finally arrived,, Santa can land his sleigh. Now if I can only figure out a way to hook up those reindeer..

Oh dear... Tom. I have that same Charlie Brown Christmas tree. (also received as a gag gift) Unfortunately, it has to suffice in the camper. No room for anything else.
Ever since I saw those photos of the Christmas log home in the students' home photos section, it's been a major driving force to reach that goal. It's been a long, long time since Christmas has "felt good" to me, and I think having my log home adorned for the holidays will be a nice step in the right direction.

If LHN wouldn't mind the total thread-jack, we could move this thread into the non-members area and make it the 'unofficial' LHBA holiday thread ;) And then repost some of the pics from here to our FB account (http://www.facebook.com/loghomeassociation) to help spread the Christmas cheer. I had to put the lights on with the tree laying down! Then once it was up, slid it over to the balcony, decorated the top, slid it back in place in the room, and jumped on the ladder,,,,,half in the tree,,,,and got it done! It only took three people to move the dang thing around!

As most of you know I was hoping to be in the house by Christmas and had planed to celebrate Christmas in our new home this year. We will not be living in the new house by Christmas but we will be celebrating there. This Saturday we picked out a 12'+ Christmas tree. Weighed close to 100 pounds. I have never had a tree like this, funny thing is it looks small in the corner of our 20' wall. We have not decorated for Christmas the past three years because we are living in a two bedroom trailer with 5 children while we are building on site, no room. Yet we have still had the most amazing times living here while we have been building. One year my daughter made the statement that she likes living here better than any other place she has lived, we asked why, her answer was its so close and snugly and I like close and snugly. We will endeavor to maintain close and snugly after we transition into 2300 square feet.
I will post some pictures here after we decorate. Merry Christmas and may God bless you all.

Very Sweet story, Blane. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas to you and yours -- and may they all be......."Close and Snuggly" :)
I guess I'm sort of in the bucket with a few others. We haven't decorated since we started our building project(s) years ago and during all the moving and living in temporary small quarters we got rid of a great deal of "stuff" including some decorations...and gave some to my now married off daughter. Jenny and I will have our little Charlie Brown tree again this year. But I think after Christmas, when decorations go on sale, we're going to purchase items for the home and tower.
We watched "How the Grinch stole Christmas" (on vhs none the less) last night and am reminded that Christmas isn't about decorations, or food, or gifts, but about the spirit that moves in all of us, no matter our religion. So to all you "Who's" out there in "Who-ville", may the Grinches in your life have hearts that grow three sizes, and a joyus Merry Christmas, and may you all have a blessed and safe 2013!

I have to say my best childhood memory was the year we got "snowed in" without electricity for seven days. No distractions, we had to "entertain" each other. Mom, Dad and us five siblings. We cooked on the fireplace. We went to bed when it was dark. Funny part even though I loved "sleeping in", we got up about sunrise. Read bunches. Played board games. All slept around the fireplace. It really was grand.
Thanks for sharing Blane. Really looking forward to getting to the class in March, then having the opportunity to meet you and your family and see that giant home!!

Dad died a couple of years ago. Mom is still hanging on (slightly) at 87. So I might be able to share some old family Super 8 movies of 1960-70 vacations with her before she passes. I'm having them converted to DVDs.

Two Christmas Trees... We feel the same way about it around here but have never had the room for the second one. Here's a couple of photos from the outside as we decorate or 6' tree dangling from the rafters. We didn't have a block and tackle (telehandler folks) so we couldn't just lower it to decorate it.

That photo feels so 1950's to me. (don't get me wrong. I think the '50s were the best part of the 20th century. I only wish I would have been around to enjoy that time period)

I really wanted to string lights on the radio tower now that it's up, but the weather has been absolutely brutal since it's install. (25F, snowing, wind gusts to 55mph) No way I'm climbing in that.

Yup, I woke up this morning and realized I have to finish this durned house. Life has been a bit relaxing here on the old homestead ever since I joined the Mayan Church but now I realize they was just a bunch of cultists and had the date all wrong. Ya, StumpyFuzWolf busted my chops too about surviving into today, it must be something in the blood about just enjoying the homestead and all. I thought I was off the hook yesterday when the plow truck broke after our storm... no reason to plow. Had to go shopping today, I was going to save all that Christmas money.
It's a BeautY Big Cuz! I can hardly wait to see the night shot with the lights on this year. Our "CB" tree is up and Linda did a beautiful job with the three bulbs and garland. Mother Nature painted the trees here prettier than I could ever hang a string of lights. We are so blessed.
Merry Christmas

Thats really cool fireplace, trying to get a better look to see if it is a fire or a bigscreen tv with a fire picture. You have pulled our leg one to many times to just take it at face value!! It is a great job of stacking logs and timber to get a great looking frame. That would have to mean you have been doing something in you rest period. Looks like a bit of welding has been going on. It is awesome weather you did it or the do it people did it. I'm guessing with the ribbon on the fish either it was you LHN or Jake. Beautiful. Have a very Merry Christmas. The tree is beautiful as well.

There's a hole in the wall where there'll be a french door someday. I blocked the hole with an air mattress and stacked up a bunch of beams and assorted log chunks to make a fireplace for my 42" Vizio. That "crackling fire" DVD really sets it off.
As for the fish hanging above the mantle. When Jake was 14 he made that relief of a Gray Whale out of a 1981 Dodge truck fender. I didn't have a cutting torch at the time so he cut it out with an arc welder cranked up high and then formed it with a rubber mallet using an oak stump for an anvil. His Mother cried and cried when he gave it to her. He entered it in the Josephine County Fair and it took the Best of Show ribbon and was the one piece of art chosen to represent Josephine County at the Oregon State Fair in Salem that year. When we went to the State Fair to see it, there was a huge wall of art from every County in the State. All of it was flat art in various media but for Jake's sculpture standing out like a hen at a dog kennel smack in the middle of it. The exhibit was guarded by two cute little ole ladies. When they saw us looking at it they said "Isn't that the most amazing thing you've ever seen? It was created by a 14 year old boy in Grants Pass".

OK. It's been killin' me to get this shot, and today was the first nice day in the past 8, the next week is calling for snow every day, and despite being still pretty windy, I just bit the bullet, did what needed doing, and present "Top of the World"

Too windy to string Christmas lights, so this will have to suffice.

Beautiful photo Tom. I love a winter sky.
My step-mother and her sister came for two days and Natalie and I spent a good part of those two days digging the snow out the driveway twice so she could leave. After they left yesterday, I did what I NEVER DO...put the recliner back and slept the rest of the afternoon away! Instead of the end of the world, we got the beginning of the Syracuse winter.
Unfortunately, we have to go out on the icy streets to buy some food after the "biddies" ate us out of house and home. We're looking forward to a quiet Christmas with music and a fire. Speaking of fire, did I mention that Natalie, my one and only, is now a volunteer firefighter in our community? I'm very proud of her for stepping up and doing what so many citizens are refusing to do these days. Fire departments all over cannot get the volunteers from the communities they serve but these communities take fire department response for granted. Nobody wants to pay or participate for anything anymore, not even fire service. Everyone's worried about their money but not the health and safety of community. My daughter will be putting her life on the line for no pay while everyone else is crying about their pounds and pence. All I want for Christmas is to see Americans be a little less selfish.
Y'all have a happy Christmas!

Happy Holidays!
Weather was VERY nice yesterday, if a bit windy. But I think I finished clearing the path up to the wellsite for the well driller to get in there, got a couple more logs stacked for a shed (next summer's project), and hauled yet another load of firewood down from our property (that's a never ending job for us--both because we need to thin the forest, and because it's nice to keep a hefty supply of firewood at our rental place).
First, a picture of the view looking towards the nearly setting sun...

Sometimes you don’t know how great this time of year can be until you risk losing it all.
There are things in my family’s life that have gone unspoken here. At the hub of it all is the different methods of rearing children that my Wife and I have. I’m a confronter and she’s a comforter. She doesn’t mind a bit of conflict but she’s not one to risk anything to get to the meat of the problem if there’s a chance to let it die of old age. I too, don’t mind a bit of conflict but I’ll never let it sit there and die of natural causes. I say “Pick the scab and let it bleed out the bad blood”. Neither of us wants to yell and scream and beat each other up. I want to quietly talk out the problem and solve it and she wants to quietly evade the problem and let it solve itself.
Now back to rearing children. Jake has accidentally turned into the kind of a Man that most parents want their daughters to marry and most employers want to hire. He can take care of himself and tends to take care of others. Still, there have been issues. While respectful to the seething masses of the population, he has, at times, been very disrespectful to his father. Much of it is a kid testing the waters and growing away from the apron strings. Some of it has been inexcusable.
I have attacked the problem head on and with every tool I have, while Patty has tried to keep the peace and stay out of it. It’s lead to a situation where I am treated a lot like a stepfather. Raising a son is not a democracy or a popularity contest. It is two people, acting as Siamese Twins, in a battle to the death against all the snotty little tricks that a kid can discover in a attempt to veer off course and onto the wrong set of tracks.
This problem severely reared it’s ugly head as we were finishing sheeting in the roof of the log home. It was ugly and nasty and I felt all alone and in the minority. I felt like I was the only person in the world who thought that a Son, who was earning a wage while building the log home he would inherit, should treat me like an employer as well as a father. We finally had to fire Him. It didn’t stop there and I decided to do whatever was in my power to solve the problem. I gave my Son the best gift a father can give. I left. I camped in my car for over a month to show Jake what it was really like to not have a father. Patty was opposed to it but accepted it for what it was. Jake acted predictably and there was plenty of screaming, blame and misconception aimed at me and the terrible thing I had done.
In the end Jake agreed to go camping with me and he had a taste of the life I had been living as we calmly talked about what the problem was and how to solve it. Of course Jake and I could only solve half of the problem. His Mother and I had not been on the same page about some things and she saw her role as the person who would keep the home fires stoked and be everybody’s friend. As long as nobody thought she was on anybody’s side, she was safe and secure and not a part of the solution. That means that there was no real solution, only a truce.
It happened again. And again. Truce. Truce.
It has been easy for me to laugh and joke about taking a little time off from the log home, and easy to be completely truthful about how lazy I am. Easy, yes… But not the entire story. By not actively working on the house, I have been leaving an open door for Jake to walk up and say “Why don’t we put up some loft floor joists”. It hasn’t happened and his life is reaching the point where I would want him drifting farther away instead of closer. He must still be respectful, but he is off the hook as far as this log home being his driving force. He is now building his future and educating himself as he earns a living in the big world.
So that kinda says it all about why I have been so extra lazy on the log home. What has it got to do with Christmas? Well a month or two ago Jake became very disrespectful to me as I was in the midst of being very helpful to him and one of his friends. I took him aside and asked that he not let a friend of his witness that kind of behavior. Halfway to getting really ugly, I simply walked away and let him lay in his own filth (figuratively speaking). I let my Son toss away everything that his Mother and I were trying to give him and his buddy. I treated him like a Stepson. Patty treated me like her Son’s Stepfather. I am not a bad guy and I am somewhat being treated like one.
So, after a month or two of son moving farther away from father, Patty wanted to have half of a conversation about why I can’t solve the problem. Negotiations ceased sometime just after I explained why I thought I could only solve half the problem. The other half of the conversation was not to come. There were attempts to discuss the problem but to no good end. Still civilized but not fruitful attempts.
On December 11th, one hour after I posted the opening post on the “2012 Holiday” thread, it all went to Hell. I went off to fetch our Christmas Tree alone and came back to a cold, empty Spouse. I have been camping from then until December 23rd. Severely bad weather and no fun. I took it as a chance to practice some survival skills. It must have worked as I have survived.
Through it all, I have been working on making a log home Christmas possible. I stacked up a fireplace and put the tree together as much as I could. One day I corralled Patty into helping me string some of the upper tree lights but there was not much more cooperation. We hugged once as she bemoaned the fact that this would be the worst Christmas in history. I agreed with her that it would either be the worst ever or the best ever.
After several unsuccessful hot tub sessions, the Wife I love suddenly started talking about the problem. She picked the scab and a bunch of pus oozed out. Problem solved. I will no longer be a stepfather.
Once that tick was dead, it was a simple matter to twist the bulging bag of putrid blood off of Jake’s soul and squish it. I think he understood most of what was happening instinctively and grew up enough recently to grasp the rest of it. I’m thinking he’ll have an easier go of life than I had (not complaining).
This is the best Christmas ever in our household. Best wishes to the rest of you.

Somehow in our hearts we knew there was much more to the story. At least I, have felt and thought more than once um-m-m? Thanks for sharing your anguish with us. It is hard to explain to anyone outside of this group how much the lives, joys and tragedies of the others touch us. So glad the tick is squashed and the healing is happening. Nothing affects us more than what we see going on with our children. I think I said before we can really only be as happy as our saddest child. At least a real parent.
For your family and all the rest here we wish you a very Merry Christmas

It takes a brave soul to bare your own in front of others. Whether it's in person or in a public forum here on the net. Pardon this for a moment ladies, but it's even harder for us males to bare our very souls in any fashion. It's the nature of our beast. I believe the most challenging aspect of parenting is the epiphany of realizing our children, sons or daughters are very much like us, warts and all. Another difficult realization is opposites attract. In difficult times our life partners who we expect to be supportive are sometimes the contrast we dearly need. In the short term aftermath of challenging times, we aren't capable of appreciating the blessing of the challenge. In time, however, I believe the most trying experiences are the (pardon the analogy but it's appropo) chinking that holds us together.
I know for me personally the most trying time I experienced with my father, is the time I cherish most and brought us much closer.
I respect you for sharing LHN, and thank you for same. It sounds like your family has made it through the arduous valley and are initiating the ascent to a wonderful mountaintop. Don't ever stop trying, my friend, heavy lifting makes us stronger. God bless you all. May 2013 bring you many blessings!

Oof! Unlike Mosseyme, I didn't see this coming. (but then, as a guy, isn't natural not to have that instinct?) Reading that was quite a shock, nearly that of watching an impending train-wreck about to occur. I must admit, I was fearful to reach the end of your post, but also optimistically hopeful at the same time, being that you posted to this thread. It is quite a story. Movie worthy, really. I myself having a permanently fractured family relationship can appreciate that you were able to get through it, and maintain the bonds which really do make life the value that it is. Hopefully everyone took from it some experiences that will prevent a repeat of such high proportions, and helped to bring everyone together to a tighter-knit family. (negatives always have positives, zen thing?)

Cool, lil bro. Nice job. Like Rod, I was completely oblivious. I went through similar situation with my first wife and step-son. He finally left and then we divorced. PAINFUL. But The Lord opened another door and after 20 years with Merry, I'm happier than a pig in slop. We had our rough years as I learned what a poor communicator I was, but counseling got us through it. I now actually have a good relationship with that stepson, as well as my other 4 step kids and my two kids, and even my ex. All 19 of us (5 grandkids) (not the ex :)) are going on a ski trip in a couple weeks, which we've been doing for 15 years now. Those tough times are a bitch when we're going through them, but it's all worthwhile in the end.
May The Lord bless your marriage and your family!

We so easily forget how we were at their age... and it's different with them? Being on the same page as parents is I believe one of the greatest challenges we face. Moms in general (sorry ladies) want to coddle their kids and us bone head dads want to whip them into adults. LHN has forgotten that I fired our son Dan three times while working with me when he was younger, mostly for not getting up for work after a little to much fun the night before. I never hired him back after the last strike and he did eventually grew up and now shows up to his job at least 1/2 hour before his shift starts. Even after our last snow storm he was on time to start his shift, he was determined not to be late. Some get it, some don't, it's their journey once they become adults, you can only pray that they'll be ok and do the right thing. Jake is a good person, he has a great foundation, he'll figure it out. It's his time to make his own mistakes and learn from them if he does, he's just spreading his wings a bit.
More important now that you and the Mrs. heal your partnership. No matter what path he chooses you've done the best of your abilities to give him what he needs, most important is the love he received. I know there was no lack of it. He has spread his wings, you have prepared him for this time. That is our job as parents as I see it, you have to let him fly mostly on his own now, he'll crash once in awhile as we did and will continue to make mistakes as we do too. To err is human, it's the forgive part that we all need to work on. Sometime the challenges we face, in the end when we look back were opportunities for the heart to grow.... as long as we learn and move on, some do, some don't, we only have control over ourselves and what we do about it.

About five years ago things turned upside down. I wrote this down to reinforce my true belief that there is a tomorrow, to hold off doing what was wanted and to do what was needed, to build on and make the best of what is. It’s sort of corny and I never thought I would share it. It being the season and caught up in the moment, what the heck. Talk about feeling vulnerable. Oh well.
There is sadness there is grief
From that of Yesterday’s strife
Tomorrow is the first day
Of the rest of my life
Today I remember
But live not in the past
There is a Tomorrow

Doesn't sound corny to me at all. Very well written and true words of wisdom spoken in your poem!
About 20 years ago, my son and I got into a physical fight (more wrestling than punching, with no injuries but our feelings toward each other). It happened on a Sunday morning before we went to church. I was devastated. I'm sure LHN can understand how I felt, because I can understand what he was going through.
My son and I became estranged after that incident for about a year. Gradually over time our relationship became stronger and today he and his beautiful family live 15 minutes away from us, after moving down from northwest Illinois to be closer to us. He and his wife successfully started their own business. We thank God constantly for His blessings in providing us with healthy family members and relationships.
My hope and prayer for you LHN, is that your relationship with your son will grow stronger and more fulfilling over time as it did in my case.

At 29, my first wife died hours after the birth of our first (daughter) child. I spent the next 25 years trying to recover. A little over 6 years ago while in a self destructive slide, I met a totally foreign Japanese immigrant (at starbucks) with two teenage children. One is my awesome autistic son. One "was" an invisible daughter that was failing middle school. (She graduate from high school last year with a 3.64 GPA) All of us have prospered and we are all much healthier and happy now.
We don't always get what we planned on but we usually get what we need. I am most proud of being a stepfather. However, don't call me a stepfather. I am also proud that I am the healthiest and happiest I have ever been in my almost 62 years. I am more proud that my wife and two kids are also the happiest and healthiest they have ever been in their lives.
The one regret is I have no relationship with my oldest daughter. But I have learned to live with that. I can't predict what will happen in the future except that we will be happy, together. My son will prosper and will learn a lot about life once we get on our hundreds of acres and in our home and start farming.
We expect many changes for 2013 and are looking forward to our new year in a new state.
Enjoy 'em while we have 'em.

Ditto. I have 5 stepchildren and 2 of my own but they are all the same, and all call me "Dad"

How are the plans and Muffins coming along? Do you have the amended plans back from the engineer? What is the turn around time?

I have plans back from engineer. I have to make a few adjustments of my own, then schedule a time to take them in. I emailed he plan checker and ask her what I need to do to take this up a level. She provided the Chief plan officer's name, so I will call him and make a appointment.
Timing is the issue now. They are only open Mon-Thurs and with my work schedule and other commitments I don't think I will be able to get together with him until about Jan 23. But I won't be able to do any construction until late March so it should be okay.
Thanks!

Darn it Bo,
You have 4 days each week to go in and pester them. Take a sick day and get it done! At this rate I'm gonna be too old to properly harass you during the build.
PS... He always did have confrontational issues. I remember the time we tossed his book report down the outhouse hole. He pretended to have Polio so he could miss the rest of the school year and not have to face Mrs. Branson. Had to go through 5th grade again, again.

Bo,
There's usually a time limit on the permit. In Oregon, it's 2 years I believe. Just an FYI so you might be able to avoid another trip to extend the time. So in this case, the delay is a good thing since you won't start until March.
BoFuller
12-29-2012, 07:52 PM
Ed, exactly. Any time prior to when I can start is wasted, so if I can get it issued closer to March, that would be ideal.

Happy New Year !!
Linda, the hound dog & I will probably be sleeping by the time the ball drops. We spent the day driving from lower Michigan to home today, she came down with the flu bug last night at her parents and wanted to come home today. She's feeling better this eve and will be into sauna therapy shortly.
I look forward to everyones progress in 2013. There has been a lot of great stuff here again this past year. So we'll move the "bar" a little higher in "13" and continue one step at a time forward. I think Skip would be pretty proud of the gang that has assembled here and how the seed that he planted many years ago has grown mighty fine. In a world that's a mess, this is a good thing that is happening in life. A place that holds some realistic Hope that through hard work you can accomplish something that is substantial, building a house is no small undertaking. I think we've actually gone a little further, we've actually gone over the line and into the building of "Home". It's just showing the true Heart of the people here!
You All have been a part in keeping our fire going.

I finally was able to get ahold a few of these from my friend Steve Krook that ran an open luge run at his home for over 30yrs. The hound doggy trained in here as he greeted several thousand people his first winter. Fred's surrogate mom "Cleo Patras" is next to him. She would sing with us while we played our horns, Fred never learned that trick... but he got a treat anyways.
"Krook's Run" We made many Snowmen on the hill through the years, along with many other snow structures. The "Hill" was over 800', in a curved, iced, luge style. It took Thousands of man hours to make this work and not one penny was made by anybody, donations just started to cover the costs of hot chocolate alone when the hill closed in 2010.
I talked to Steve today and I'm going to get the picture file from him, I'll set up a site and will get the pic's up there.
May the Holiday Spirit continue throughout the Year!

Merry Christmas to all,
Here we have been celebrating Christmas for 4 days starting with the weekend family reunion for Mom's 90th BD 36 in all from Seattle, Saginaw, Travers City, Atlanta, Columbus OH, Nashville, Knoxville, Asheville, and Hendersonville NC. It was quite a celebration. First time all 10 grandchildren had all been together ever. They are in ages from 43 down to 18 years old. All 12 great grands were there as well, first time ever. Ages 10 months to 11 years old. Fortunately we had the use of the church Gym, with kitchen and sleeping rooms, for the weekend in the pouring rain. Made for a great time for all. Brother rented a great big RV and hauled all 12 of his crew down from MI and OH.
