I don't see a thread anywhere about the November class so I figured I would start it. I am registered and thrilled to be taking real steps to realizing my life-long dream of building and living in a log cabin!
Right now I travel full time with wife and daughter in our RV. We are looking to build a home base as we continue our extensive traveling. Likely location will be Cooperstown, NY. We are here now and will begin our long journey west in about 3 weeks.

Not so fast there, Buddy... You can't just waltz in here off the street and expect an open-armed welcome without offering up a little bit of yourself. I want to hear a little more about your housetruck. Where's the photos? Did you build it yourself? Ante up.
Welcome aboard. You are gonna love this place.
PS... I was a full timer in my bus for years.

Excuse my little brother's manners. You may not be able to "waltz" in but you are welcome to "Two-Step" in.

Well, I suppose a two-step would be OK.
BUT NO WALTZING UNTIL WE GET PHOTOS OF THAT HOUSETRUCK!!!

"Test post" as my last response said it had to be approved by moderators but never posted.

I figure the reason the post has to be approved is because of the link I provided for loghousenut to view our housetruck. So, I will leave that out this time and just give a photo instead...and no, I did not build it :) sorry the photo is so big but I wasn't able to shrink it.

Haha...When we bought our first motorhome, my then 2 yr old, now 5, called it a "house truck". We later found out about the house trucks you linked. They are much cooler than ours.

The trailer is beautiful. The package would just look better with a GM hauling it. <smile> Just roughing it outdoors? Cool ride. It'll look even better when you're coming back from a vacation and return to your finished log home.
Welcome to the family.

Thank you edkemper! If GM built a pickup truck that could haul 24k lbs, I would have bought it.

Wow... some of those housetrucks really have to look out for powerlines and bridges. Then again everyone needs their vey own mobile helicopter pad.

Hey LHN, you said "was" full time in a bus. Are you moved in or living in something else?

He was, I had the privilege of spending a night in said bus, very comfy! He has gotten all uppity and moved into a trailer you can take the axles off of.
On a side note, I have been diligently searching for a late model chevy diesel, they are consistently 5-8k more then the equivalent Fords. I just cant bring myself to sit behind the blue oval.....

I live near Smith Mountain Lake, which has in recent years (until the crash) attracted a lot of uppity rich people. When trying to find someone to go standup jetskiing with on another forum, the guy replied "just come into Yacht cove, our dock will be the one with the helicopter on it" lifes rough......

You need to come through CA sometime. We could balance our budget off the tickets.
2008 F450 spec sheet
27,000 lbs. GCWR Maximum GCWR
Sounds like your about 5,000 overweight for your truck.
But you are right, the GM 4500 was a lightweight at only a 26,000 GCWR.
housetruckin
09-07-2012, 05:21 AM
Haha...No that's not correct. 2008 F-450 GCWR is 33,000.

That's what I get for reading Edmonds instead of Ford. You are absolutely correct. My mistake. But I still prefer GM. That weight also appears to only be with the Diesel. But I could be wrong again.
Welcome Housetruckin! Along with my big brother (LHN) and all the others, welcome to the family! I'm just warning you now.....joining this group is going to change your life! We all know what you're going through right now.......you can't wait for the class to start, you've probably read all 20,000 postings by now, you've gone over 100's of floor plans and ideas in your head, you can't wait for the class to start and did I say, "you can't wait for the class to start?" And by the way, I'm glad to hear there's another proud FORD owner in the group! Just remember, the "joy is in the journey"! Welcome aboard!

And, yes, I am proud not to own a Government Motors truck.

I've never had to replace a fuel pump on a foreign vehicle. Only on American made vehicles. (though I don't know what country of origin the OEM fuel pumps were manufactured in)
Just a random observation.
Please don't hit me!

The tax man sold us a 29,000lb tag for our Ram 2500 cummins diesel 4x4. We come out to give or take 28,000lbs with trailer and dozer. Guess we won't try the tele. Always had Ford before. Would not consider anything else but those people just would not sell us a Ford with a Cummins engine and we want to go for the 500,000 mile mark or something like that.

Ya know I could seriously derail this truck discussion by claiming the superiority of the 12 valve Cummins, but I won't do that. :p
Housetruckin', that is one fine rig you've got there. I had no idea they weighed that much.

LHN, I've thought more than once about building a small butt and pass cabin on the back of a peterbilt. As fun as that would be, I'll probably convert a school bus instead. I hear Skip had something similar, scandinavian chinkless on a flat bed truck he took to parades?

It was Scabndanavian Chinkless with Genuine Fort Ticonderoga log end treatments.
PS. I don't know how they teach it nowadays, but in 1981 when I first took the class from Skip, there was a story behind those log end treatments.

I dont recall where i heard it but sad news about Cummins/ They will no longer make motors for over the road vechiles. Only big equipment=might even included big rigs as i think a trucker told me that...EPA got them to say no more of your strangle holds on us

Glad we stuck to our guns and found one while they are still out there. Of course we did get the same year we had before, 2003, with under a 100,000m on it. Gary drove a total of 3000 miles in 5 days plus flying to Tx to find the truck that had the specs we needed and didn't have 200,000 to 400,000 miles on it.

Attended the Nov 11-12th class and have to say it was all everyone says it is. So much information, makes you feel confident that you can do it just take it step by step. Anyone considering taking the class I would highly recommend signing up as soon as possible!
My name is Rob, and I have been retired for about 8 years. My wife (Dinah) works full time as a dietitian at the local hospital. We purchased 1 1/2 acres in northern Michigan and that is where we will be building our log home. Next summer, about May, I will begin clearing our land for building. My wife will come up there for two 2 1/2 week vacations, and I will stay up there most of the summer, at least that is the plan. Then the next summer we will work on where we left off.
Right now I am waiting for our 30x30 stock plans, and will be working on building the model log home over the winter. Also, will be researching tools, accumulating some, and even more during the summer up there.
We can not have a trailer on our property, but can have one in their "campers village". So for $241 a month including electricity, water, and facilities, I guess that is not too bad. First thing I do when I get up there is to get an "ugly trailer" to live in.
I know it will take us a few years to finally complete this project, but we will be taking our time and enjoying the experience.

Classic symptoms Rob aka "rcdon", of having caught the LHB-Fever! You have at least 2, maybe 3 other members within a couple hours or 3, from you, up on the U.P. (Tom Featherstone for one). If my geo-knowledge is correct.
Can't WAIT to see the picture and caption that LHN will post in response to your comments :)
Wait for it......Wait for it......

Welcome aboard Rob!
I wouldn't complain about the $241 per month if it is nice and close to the site.
You know there's no rule that says it has to be an ugly trailer. Mine is really not that bad to look at til you start comparing it to my uppity neighbors with money. They even have a fish pond and a greenhouse.

I am in Traverse City. I have been lurking around the website from around 2006 or 2007. Took the class in Feb 2011. Building a shed. Almost done, see the link. And now, this spring I hoping to start building a log home for my family. I am in process of clearring my land and getting permits ready for springtime. Good luck and God Bless you.
