A hip roof seems like it would make sense on a log house. You could extend it well over the logs on all four sides. Especially on a one story. I picture it with a wraparound porch on all four sides. Don't see any pictures in the student home section.

Pros / Cons? Anybody know anybody that did it? Is there some drawback to it, besides no windows on the upper floor?

Some may find it aesthetically unpleasing on a log home, but it's more or less not seen because the class teaches the common person how to build as simple as possible. A hip roof is definitely more complicated, not only for construction of itself, but also for steps required for structural support within the building envelope.

And heck, you'd be cutting out one of the best features. The massive ridge pole!

yeah, what THEY said. but I can see your point, with the roof on all 4 sides extending out over the porch, though for it to work, at least in our case, the pitch of the roof would have to be very minimal in order to not have the roof edge at the end of the porch be so low that we'd be hitting our heads :)
