I'm starting a new thread to carry over the discussion on the previous one about the old home being torn down.
Is there an increasing problem out there right now finding carriers to insure log homes? Do you think this trend will continue? Does the class and/or member's side have a list of companies that insure log homes in different states? Should I take the class? :)

John,
There's been a bunch of good insurance discussion on the members side of the forum and it is covered in class. Bottom line is that insurance seems to be no more problem as a rule for us than for stick house folks. It is a necessary evil that is not a problem. And yes... Take the class.

I doubt it is any different with a log home than with any other home from what I have heard - and not privy to the other side here so I don't know what they say.
Insurance companies love premium , the higher the better, so I imagine there always is a source. Heck - Lloyd's would be there if no one else was. lol
I don't think this is log issue is my opinion - location and access to availabilty to put out a fire enters into any rating for premium structure and limitations of specific carrier(s).
The guys here can address that - I bought a parcel in the UP that is a long haul from the only fire staion. That is volunteer to boot. It's a stick built frame cabin and I intend to build a log cabin out back and use this for a shop/whatever someday.
In a year every company around may be screaming for premium and begging for my business. It is what it is I guess

My sister has a kit built log home and her problem is not insurance but finding comparibles for selling it.

Not so much importance on whether they'll insure, as it is whether they'll pay a claim.

I wouldn't touch State Farm with a 50 foot pole.

As long as the taper wasn't to severe, I would if I could swing it. <smile> What types of trees are we speaking of?

Perhaps we forget that insurance companies win with every loss. That is the nature and business plan of the business. Every loss (so to speak) causes an increase in rates. Every increase also increases the total bottom line by an ever increasing amount.

Here in MN I would rate AMICA, Hartford. Liberty Mutual, State Farm and the old IDS, now Ameriprise as easily the Top % in claims paying. Easily the Top Dogs.
Not sure what the criteria is for this and imagine also it's the disgrunteled who usually speak the loudest so .....
If I am contracted with any of these companies I know I can treat the scope of loss like I would want to be treated, no questions asked by a manager. Pay it all if a clean claim - done.
Thisw list blows my mind - I see a lot of the poorest claim payers sitting way down it.
I have no clue how this plays out but wow - I don't buy into this bs at all based on the upper midwest claim area
