    Hard wood vs. Soft wood

    We have seen most of the houses that are listed are made from soft wood. Can you build a house out of hard wood. We mostly have post oaks, pin oaks and water oaks. The pin oaks and water oaks are the straight with and very tall but just did not know if they would work.

    We live about 50 miles northeast of College Station, Texas.

    hardwood

    I built my log home out of yellow poplar, a hardwood. Oak will work and be very durable, but driving spikes into oak will be quite a challenge, especially if it is allowed to dry first. Most oaks are not straight enough, tall enough, and are too tapered as well. I've seen a few pin oaks that would make a good cabin log, tho-

    Use what you can get!
