Is this a good deal for solar panels?

    Hi folks -
I'm not ready for solar panels, but apparently, they are ready for me.....

A friend from Texas is offering me a pallet of free solar panels. I just need to pay the freight, which turns out to be $548.

    What do y'all think?

does it sound like a good deal? if they sat around for years in a garage, is that ok? what am I missing here?

Yes, that is an excellent deal.

    28 panels * 200 watts / panel = 5600 watts

The street price for new ones is very roughly $1/watt. So if those were new, it would cost $5600, PLUS shipping.

Your deal is like paying 9.7 cents per watt, with free shipping.

Used is fine, as long as they were working when taken out of service. They are normally rated for 80% of the original power after 20 years, but they continue to produce.

I bought used, and with shipping, paid a total of about 33 cents per watt, and am very happy with that.

Also, you may be able to get shipping cost down further if you have a dock, lift, or forks to unload.

    Drive there... Free vacation.

Three days there and three days back. Different route each way. That Texas hill country is alive right now in the middle of wildflower season. Compares favorably to the fall colors in the northeast.

It is a great deal whether you pay the freight or pay the gas and time. Thank your friend generously.

If they are either monocrystaline or polycrystaline panels, (NOT amorphous) and even if they are used, that's still a great deal.
