    Thoughts on using hickory

Has anyone ever used hickory for their cabins? I have about 40 acres of large, straight, minimal taper hickory. My concern is checking ,and issues with rot and insects.

You can build with anything you have. Rot is directly tied to how dry you keep your logs. Insects are kept at bay with non harsh chemical treating. I will probably use SYP, don't think hickory checks more than SYP. Of course checking is more a challenge depending on construction method used. We use full round logs. Checking is not a concern.

I just went down to the woods to test debarking that hickory, of which is all shagbark, and found it to be almost and impossible job. I think I will have to look at other alternatives.

If cut in the winter it's all but impossible without drawkniving it. Though if cut at the right time in winterhickory ddoesn't have to be debarked before using

Yea. Ya just load a piece into a 20 gauge shotgun and put the muzzle against the log.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Send a truckload or two out here and I'll let the Oregon bark beetles get a head start on them. I've been looking for a new project to give me a valid excuse for not finishing the last project. This hickory hideaway oughta keep me on the Boss's good side for a year or two.

One of the few problems we have on the west coast is a lack of shagbark hickory for our ax handles.
