Jeff,
You might be nuts by the time you are done but you will be in a more peaceful place. You will both be glad you did it and it will give you something to do with your retirement.

The best feeling ever! Cash is king. Finished our place 5 years ago and put 6000 on a credit card that we paid off the following month interest free just because I couldn’t wait one more month
Bleach will do the trick. I went 50/50
I remember my BI asking when I thought I would be moving after I was dried in. I said by Christmas I hope. He laughed and asked what year? Two years later we moved in one week before Christmas.

Here is a shot taken a couple of years ago. Notice, I still don’t have a wrap around deck
Welcome aboard!
I used the plans for the 35x35. The plans we're easy to follow. And modifications here and there were no big deal.
See my blog for photos
No I have never seen any up there. Most folks like the kit homes around there.
I'm about an hour and a half from Hiawasee. Pm me after you make your class and we will show you our place. We spend lots of time on Chatugue in the summer.
Where at in NC?
I have spent the past 4 months tearing down the old trailer that was once our home. It had a plak on the front side that said "Madison Mansion" mounted to the front. It's the only thing my wife...
So, here's my story. We purchased our land that had a single wide 35 year old trailer on it that was literally falling apart and moved into it with 5 children and built our home debt free. We...
I like that my place is hard to find as well. In the summer you would never see my house till you turned into the drive.
I would urge you to get the insurance if you can. It would be awful if a kind hearted buddy got hurt trying to help you out and you were uninsured.
Same here. I think it's so you are not trying to scam the government out of their money. Ya know they don't have enough of our blood sweat an tears.
I am mostly done. We still have lots to do but we moved in two years ago and have not updated our blog since. We love the home and will keep chipping away at finishing it as finances allow....
You should be able to get an owner builder permit which does not require a contractors liscence. At least where I built.
In WNC haywood county. No debt and loving it!
If you have built a home yourself you can do this yourself just as easily. But there are folks that can build the shell and leave the rest to you. This is a much different type of home than the kit...
Which mountains are you looking to move to?
I had the same negative responses from my family a friends. They all live visiting us in our log home now.
If you dig around here on this end you can find some student blogs. Mine is included here but I haven't updated it since we moved in almost two years ago. :-)
I have pretty much done the same as LHN. Our weather here is fairly mild in WNC though. We have no AC and when we have friends over they think the AC is on. In the winter we can heat the house pretty...
Kevin,
I built in haywood county because building department and codes were better than buncombe and Henderson. Talk to them before you buy.
Hi Mark, lots if NC folks here! Welcome aboard. There will be a South East meet and greet at my place in October. Hope you can make it.
I'm with you Ronnie. I've done a little traveling myself. Germany, Russia, Mexico, California and of course most other southern states and Washington but these mountains are the best for me.
