This seems like a really good idea... could be used in combination with solar panels, birds and bats would not fly into them. With our simple roofs it seems to be a really good fit... But I have no idea where one could buy this in the US. Has anyone heard of ridge blade?

Sounds interesting! They say,
"The ridgeblade is still undergoing testing at the moment, and won’t be commercially available until next year, but if you would like us to let you know when they become available in your country, please fill in the contact form on our corporate web site."

So they aren't telling yet. I hope it works as well as they think it will.

Seems like a pretty cool Idea. Judging from my experience up on the ridge of the cabin, there is potential energy there. Every time there is the slightest overcast, the wind likes to come off the tree line straight across the ridge toward the lake. I don't think it could be as efficient as a traditional turbine, but there is potential. One could fabricate such a design easy enough, and do some test research rather than wait on this company. What I see there is just an elongated squirrel cage design.

Why didn't I think of that? I wonder if it will transmit noise throughout the house.

I was wondering just the same thing. Especially with a metal roof you might well get a lot of vibration noise.

Any specs available?

Wonder which one came first ?
Lots of slow speed rotation generating lifting power don't know about electrical generation.
These guys have been working on the wing version since 1998.

So what I am seeing is that I can turn a broken swamp cooler into a generator or even a plane. SWEET! Tons of those things laying around.

The best one I saw was the washing machine water turbine conversion. On youtube greenpowersource has a lot of these types of projects. They are like the Mcgyver of of solar and wind energy.

I'm at work and work network won't let me look at the ridge blade site but are these two anything like it? There are several brands of VAWTs available.

The fanwing is not self generating... it's battery life is roughly 80 minutes. The primary purpose for these planes is for the monitoring and surveillance of streets and homes. More BIG BROTHER spy on us crap.

Essentially, yes, just laid horizontally.

I've made my opinion clear on VAWTs in the past. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/titantornado/thumbsdown_smiley.gif
