I found a good 5 acre wooded lot (Deep Creek Lake, Maryland) and the agent says it has red oak and cherry. I doubt I can use cherry, what about red oak? is it good choice?

Also, I can not attend classes this fall -- is 2006 schedule ready?
thanks

They will make beautiful cabinets, flooring, etc but the problem usually is finding trees that are straight enough and of consistant diameter over the length to make a log home. You want to run the logs full length of the wall without any splices if possible. It is best if you have less than 3" of taper over 20 to 30 ft length.

You would be better off selling the timber off your property, as cherry, oak, and walnut are the three most expensive species, and using the money to buy the logs to build. It's also my experience that five acres will not yield enough logs to build a house.

I'd buy it, leave the trees, and build in the woods!!
