Hi,

Are there any people from the UK who have taken this course and are planning/building their own log home? I've literally stumbled across the site and have spent the last two hours mumbling "No way!" and "impossible!" to myself. With the price of property in the UK spiralling upwardly out of control (as well as being hideously dull!), building a log cabin seems like a viable alternative. Does anyone know if

The techniques would be applicable and pass local building regulations?
Are materials readily available?
ETC.

I know I may sound like a really stupid individual, but the LHBA website has excited me! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Like you (A Brit)I've only recently found this website (good, innit!)
http://www.loghomebuilders.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=765
and am mooching about for similar info as yourself.

There was a Brit series on Discovery Home & Leisure called Cabin Fever.
Tim Grundy hosted it. He followed a Scottish couple as they chose their log home (from a USA Company) to it being delivered in containers and then built over the months up in Jockland.

I've been Googling for any info/websites re this programme, but so far haven't found anything usefull.
You may have a bit of better luck than me.

http://www.villas-spain-rentals.com/log-homes-uk.htm

is one site I have found but not much information and the homes are not impressive. I will keep looking

Ok I found another UK site where they build Log Homes

http://www.thelogcabincompany.co.uk/
http://www.futurecomputers.co.uk/log-cabin-homes/cabins.html
http://www.dreamwoodcabins.co.uk
So it would seem they are, at least, legal to build in the UK.

Now if you want a logboat, there is a company in Ireland that makes them I think??

Another UK member here :)

My venture is planned for Aviemore in Scotland.
Half a dozen rental oak cabins initially, then a further half dozen for sale..
Long term venture but will be worth it, I hope.

Hi everyone,
I'm building a log cabin in my back garden as a sort of scaled down version to learn the basics (it will probably end up as a summerhouse, studio, office thingy). The floor area will be 15' x 15' and I am using red ceder to build with (an average of about 10" diameter). Our building regs hold me to under 4 meters (12') so the log wall probably won't exceed 9' high.

Just to let you know the neighbours were totally amazed to see our logs being delivered in a suburban street in London... ha they haven't seen anything yet!

Cheers,

Peter
Here's a quote from another member building in London just so you get an idea there are more of you in the UK and some are building using the butt and pass method.
